A brand new pedestrian bridge “Kalemegdan”, is now connecting the monumental Belgrade fortress and the promenade on the bank of the Sava River. For the first time, the city has a direct connection between the coast and the oldest part of Belgrade, so now pedestrians or cyclists can come from the Knez Mihailova Street to the Savski Quay, by crossing from Kalemegdan Fortress.
The complex of Belgrade Fortress and Kalemegdan Park is a cultural monument of exceptional importance for the Republic of Serbia. At the same time, it has been the historical center of Belgrade for 2000 years. Kalemegdan Park is one of the biggest tourist attractions in Belgrade, as well as a favorite place of its citizens for gathering and recreation. The pedestrian bridge concept on this location is an extremely interesting compound of the historical core of the city with an urban solution, which significantly extends the main pedestrian zone and leads directly from the fortress walls to the bank of the Sava River.
The pedestrian bridge is a metal structure 75 meters long and 2.5 meters wide, with two smaller parts leading to the parking lot at Beton hala and the car park next to the staircase at the fortress. The construction has customized f people with special needs. Also, there is an elevator as well as lighting along its entire length. On the other side of the bridge, there is a park with benches and a fountain in the middle. The bridge leads to a newsly reconstructed part of the Savski Quay near Beton hala, forming the long promenade, that goes from Belgrade Waterfront do Dorćol.
This pedestrian bridge is not only a utility, but also a real work of art. There is an abstract sculpture set in the middle of construction, which is a joint work of two world-famous sculptors.
This sculpture has formed of two parts. The upper part, transported from England, was made from stainless steel by Richard Dickon, the English sculptor, and winner of the renowned Turner Prize. The lower part was made from an aluminum cast in Serbia, by Mrđan Bajić, our famous sculptor. The sculpture weighs five tons and its height is seven meters.
The Jump Inn Hotel is located just 15 minutes from this new tourist attraction. Thanks to the new pedestrian bridge, tourists now have the opportunity to take a shortened route, across the Savski Quay, on foot or by bicycle, to climb to the Belgrade Fortress, and direct a further tour of Belgrade.
